You searched and searched before you found your current Lake Havasu home. (The competition is fierce so, congratulations!) While you love your house, it might not actually be “perfect“. Compromise may be necessary. (Again, the competition in the Havasu real estate market is fierce!) The size and location fit the bill. But the kitchen could use a little freshening up. Unfortunately, you just spent several thousand dollars buying this property. Funds are limited. You can make a huge impact without spending a ton of money just by adding some color to your kitchen cabinets.
Using Color to Update Your Kitchen Cabinets
Keep Design in Mind
First, you need to keep the rest of the kitchen’s design in mind when choosing a color for your kitchen cabinets. You want the color to complement (not compete with) the rest of your color palette. For open concept kitchens that look out into the living and/or dining area, keep those colors in mind as well. You do not want them to clash with your kitchen’s color concept. Also, consider the size and light distribution when thinking about using darker colors.
Classic Colors are Timeless
Now, what color do you choose? Homes in the 1960s embraced mustard yellow and avocado green. Kitchens in the 1970s liked dark wood tones. Lacquered hardware-less cabinets painted a bright white dominated the 1980s. Light wood cabinets were on-trend in the 1990s. Today, all of these feel very “dated”. Unless you plan on this becoming your “forever home”, you might want to stay away from the more “offbeat” colors. Instead, stick with a nice neutral palette.
These Aren’t Your Mama’s Neutrals
When I say “neutral”, what do you think of? Beige? Tan? Bland and boring? No. Greys are not only neutral but very on-trend at the moment. Try a “greige” (grey and beige mix). Navy blue also works as a neutral. And don’t forget about white. Not interested in a completely white kitchen? Try painting the upper cabinets a soft white and the lower cabinets a different neutral color. Or stick with a lighter neutral color on all the kitchen cabinets and add a dark color to the island, like navy blue, dark green, or even black. This allows you to bring a different element into the space without overwhelming it. As long as the colors tie into the rest of the visible area, you will be happy with the end result. And, if you decide to change things up in another 10 years, it will still be easy to do without breaking the bank.
